Another Jahn Cousin Get-Together!

Suzie flew in from Sonoma and Jackie from Seattle, both to Lincoln, NE. Then Karen and the two sisters drove up to the Twin Cities. Cousin Paul joined them Sunday about noon and took them to lunch at the Wise Acre Eatery (http://wiseacreeatery.com/). The verdict? Delicious!

Then off around Minneapolis and St. Paul, including this stop at the famous 'Spoonbridge and Cherry' near the Walker Art Center and Guthrie Theater.

A good time was had by all!

First Edition Found!

Gustav Jahn's Neuer Frühling (New Spring), a book of poems to his second wife, Dorothea von Dieskau, was printed in at least two editions. The 2nd edition, published in 1868, is fairly easy to find. But not the 1st edition from 1856. Until now! You can see the details of my order to the bookseller in Germany at the bottom of this post. I have also included a link to the site with the search criteria for seeing all books for sale today by Gustav Jahn. If you end up buying any, let me know!

An Exciting New Find!

Look at what's below. For you, the few and faithful followers of this remote Jahn family blog, you are the first to see it. It is the Schutz-Marke - the 'protection brand' or trademark of the Züllchower Anstalten in Züllchow (ZAZ). It was, presumably, on everything made by or published at the Institutes, directed by Gustav Jahn and then our grandparents' Uncle Fritz. And this one comes from the 1929-30 Weihnachtskrippen und Spiele Verzeichnis (Christmas Cribs and Games Catalog)!

More, much more, later!

A Never-Before-Seen Photo!

Hey Jahns,

Thanks to cousin Rick - out of the blue comes this phenominal photo that I (or my father, Konrad's grandson) have never seen before.

This is the parsonage at Worms. On the left are Konrad and Freda. Richard is holding the rifle, Paul is on the fence, and that might be Dora in the white dress. The remaining 3 people are unknown.

What a great picture - thanks Rick!

Keep up with the Jahns on your Smartphone!

Hi family,

Just a new bit of info - this blog is now smartphone-friendly, so if you have an iPhone or Android or any kind of smart phone (maybe), you can follow things here on it!

Give it a try and post a comment - I wonder how it works!

New Letter from 1911

Here's one of the discoveries from the gathering in Chattanooga - a letter from Konrad's brother-in-law, Rev. Karl Kuhlmann, dated August 1, 1911. Here is the first page: as written, as transcribed and as translated.

Scenes from Lookout Mountain School

Lookout Mountain School

What an impressive operation! Erich Jahn and this community built a school that continues its legacy of excellence to this day. Inside, a portrait of Erich with his two grandchildren, Dan and Paul.

The Artist

Who is the artist in the family? Or, at least the one whose one hundred-year old paintings, drawing and sketches have been found? Why, our great-grandfather Konrad's younger brother, Fritz Jahn! He was director of the Züllchow Institutes from 1888 to 1931. This is one of my favorites. Notice the sea creatures that are part of the waves....

Next Task - Where Shall We Stay?

Looks like seven Jahn grandchildren so far in Chattanooga April 1-3, and six need a hotel. So here are some options being considered:

More on the Fire in Worms, NE

More news on the fire today. It's especially sad to see the firefighters carting away the sign under which Rick and I posed for pictures a couple of years ago.

Lost in Worms

As all Jahn family experts know, Konrad Jahn was pastor in Worms, Nebraska for several years. Across from the parsonage was the lone store where Mutti undoubtedly bought items for the family. Years later it because a tavern, most recently known as the Nitecrawlers Bar.

Sadly, the tavern burned to the ground this morning and one more footprint in the sand of Konrad's life, a place in which he once stood, is gone.

The Jahn Children

From the same photographer on the same day, this picture was found about five years ago in the closet of a church member in Amherst, Nebraska, whose family had been members at Immanuel in Watertown. She had a number of old pictures, including this one which was labeled on the back - Rev. Jahn's children. What a find!

The Jahn Children (Our Grandparents)

In anticipation of the gathering in April in Chattanooga, let's get grounded on who is whom. Konrad and Mutti (Freda) had 5 children with descendants. They were, in birth order, Jack (Gustav), Dorothea, Richard, Paul and Erich. Here's a picture of the 4 oldest from about 1900. From left to right: Richard, Dora, Paul and Jack.

Mutti's Handiwork

Mutti, Konrad's wife, Gustav's daughter-in-law, was an amazing woman with a keen eye and a steady hand. Look at this craftsmanship!

The Whole Story

Well, maybe not the whole story, but a lot more than we knew in 1983 when the first Jahn history came out. What a great story - the lives of these two men! I hope you have enjoyed it and, of course, more is in the works.

Mayor

During the 1850s, Gustav Jahn was the mayor of Sandersleben and near-by Freckleben. He managed a refurbishing of the city hall (Rathaus) which was adjacent to the Lutheran Church St. Marien. A picture of both from about 1903 shows how both looked not long after Gustav's death in 1888.

Neuer Frühling

One of Gustav Jahn's best-known books was "A New Spring," a book of poetry that expressed the renewal of life he felt after the death of his beloved first wife, Anna Wappler, and the new love of his life, Dorothea von Dieskau. The photo above shows three different editions and bindings for this widely distributed book.
